People often tell me how fun my job must be.

And they’re right… at least part of the time.

I get to dream up new gift baskets, search for beautiful products from around the world, develop exclusive organic prints, choose modern colors, and create gifts that I would genuinely love to give my own family.

There is something incredibly satisfying about watching an idea go from a sketch or conversation to a finished gift arriving at someone’s doorstep.

That creative side never gets old.

But that’s only part of the story.

The Side of Small Business Ownership You Don’t Always See

The other part?

• It’s realizing we ran out of toner while printing shipping labels.
• It’s having the embroidery machine decide today is the day it needs a repair.
• It’s waiting for UPS to arrive while an overnight order absolutely has to get out.
• It’s finding out 90 boxes are being delivered tomorrow… and the forecast calls for pouring rain.
• It’s juggling inventory, customer service, payroll, marketing, website updates, product development, and a hundred little problems that no one ever sees.

Owning your own business means there is rarely such a thing as staying in one lane.

You do whatever needs to be done because, at the end of the day, it’s your name, your customers, and your responsibility.

When You Own a Business, You Wear Every Hat

• Some days you’re a designer.
• Some days you’re a techie.
• Some days you’re customer service.
• Some days you’re carrying heavy boxes in the rain.
• And sometimes… you’re all of those people before lunch.

That’s one of the realities of running a small business. You can start the morning choosing ribbon colors and end it troubleshooting equipment, answering customer emails, rearranging inventory, and checking whether tomorrow’s shipments are going to make it out on time.

There are certainly moments when I wonder why I signed up for this.

But then something happens.

The Moments That Make the Hard Days Worth It

• A grandmother receives a personalized baby basket for her very first grandchild.
• A family celebrates a first birthday with one of our embroidered sweaters.
• A company sends a meaningful thank-you gift that makes an employee feel truly appreciated.

Those moments make every challenge worth it.

Because when you run a gift basket business, you aren’t just sending products in a box. You’re often helping someone celebrate, comfort, welcome, thank, or connect with another person.

That part never feels routine.

Building a Business Around What Matters to Me

For more than 23 years, I’ve also had the privilege of supporting talented artisans around the world, choosing organic and natural materials long before they became trendy, and donating a portion of every gift basket to causes that matter.

Our commitment to organic materials has also meant paying attention to recognized standards such as the Global Organic Textile Standard, particularly when it comes to the textiles that become part of our gifts.

Those choices have always been part of what I wanted Our Green House to represent.

Of course, running a business means thinking about sales, inventory, shipping, payroll, and growth. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s guidance on managing a business covers many of those same day-to-day responsibilities. But owning a business also allows you to decide what kind of company you want to build and what you want that company to put back into the world.

Knowing that each order helps create something bigger than just a gift is something I’ll never take for granted.

Owning Your Own Business Isn’t Always Glamorous

The truth is, owning a business isn’t glamorous most days.

• It’s messy.
• It’s unpredictable.
• It’s exhausting.

There are mistakes, delays, equipment problems, busy seasons, slow seasons, and days when the to-do list somehow gets longer no matter how much you accomplish.

But it’s also incredibly fulfilling.

I wouldn’t trade the creative process, the challenges, the relationships we’ve built, or the opportunity to be part of so many of life’s biggest moments.

Every Gift Basket Becomes Part of Someone’s Story

• Births.
• Birthdays.
• New homes.
• Retirements.
• Sympathy.
• Get-well wishes.
• Celebrations big and small.

Over the years, we’ve been invited into thousands of these moments through the gifts our customers choose to send.

Someone thought of someone else.

Someone wanted to celebrate them, comfort them, welcome them, thank them, or simply remind them that they were loved.

That’s the part of this business that means the most to me.

And after all these years, I still feel incredibly lucky that I get to be a small part of those stories every single day.

The Most Rewarding Job I Could Have Imagined

Yes, owning your own business is hard.

There are plenty of days that test your patience, your creativity, and your ability to solve five problems at once.

But there are also days when you step back, look at what you’ve built, think about the people you’ve helped celebrate, and realize how special it is to create something that becomes part of another family’s memories.

For me, it’s been the most rewarding job I could have ever imagined.
